I love playing Dungeons & Dragons with miniatures. However, if you’re going to play with minis you’ll need a battle map. The most common battle maps are blank and you can draw on with wet/dry erase markers. If you prefer something a little more eye popping, there are pre-drawn dungeon or wilderness settings. However, these can restrict how your adventures look and feel.
So, with the help of my wife (who teaches art) I learned how to make my own battle maps. It all starts with flip chart paper, it’s inexpensive and can be purchased with a 1 inch grid on it. Next pencil in your map and then go back over it with a black marker. From there I start adding colour using water colour pencil crayons or a simple kids watercolour set. The paper gets wet and some of your marker lines may bleed. Not to worry you can go back over your lines once the paper has dried.
By using water colour we can cover large areas very quickly and evenly. You’d be surprised just how quickly one of these maps come together. The end result is a battle map that will pop on your game night and enthrall your players. Check out some of our previous maps below.

These are really cool!
How long does it take you to make one of these maps on average?
